Why It Matters

Capricorn Leadership from its founding days valued the idea of authenticity. It is in our DNA. And we think it is kind of straightforward: real is better than fake, people who mean what they say are better than folks who tell you want you want to hear, and an organization that values authenticity is going to be a better place to work and a more profitable enterprise.

History

The idea that authentic leaders are seen as genuine, and the notion that this matters, is the core of a theory created by Bill George in Authentic Leadership, published in 2003.

While the book recognizes the many skills needed to be a good leader, it asserts that authenticity is key to finding success and that its presence is the biggest predictor of an employee’s job satisfaction.

Characteristics of an Authentic Leader

George’s model is based on five attributes that successful leaders either have or commit to develop. These include:

  • Sense of Purpose: authentic leaders won’t need to fake a sense of purpose, they already are passionate about their work
  • Distinct Values: an authentic leader has standards for how work is done and values that work is done correctly
  • Relationship Building: authentic leaders are willing to share things about themselves, communicate, and actually listen to others.
  • Goals and Self-Discipline: staying focused, adjusting when needed, communicating, and moving forward are key for authentic leaders
  • Genuine Heart: a leader’s caring and self awareness are important to help team members really trust leadership

Developing Your Authentic Leadership Skills

So, what if a leader lacks some of these skills? Through specific effort, a more genuine kind of leadership can be developed. Through such efforts as really understanding your own history, reflecting on what’s important to you, asking for feedback from others, and learning about and accepting different leadership styles.
