As a volunteer Board member of the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan, I am proud to be part of an organization working to prevent kidney disease and provide support for people dealing with kidney disease. As a kidney transplant recipient, I know firsthand how crucial our work is, and I am honored to contribute to the transformative efforts of the NKFM, which are changing lives every day.
The National Kidney Foundation of Michigan provides needed programs, services, and advocacy, addressing a significant public health issue in Michigan where over a million adults are affected, with many unaware of their condition. For those affected, the kidneys are damaged and cannot filter blood properly, potentially leading to kidney failure.
The Foundation’s work makes the following possible:
1. Prevention and Early Detection:
- We work to prevent kidney disease by addressing its root causes, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
- Our programs and resources help individuals manage these conditions and reduce their risk of developing kidney disease.
2. Support for People with Kidney Disease:
- We provide resources and support to individuals and families affected by kidney disease, helping them navigate treatment and care.
- Our programs improve the quality of life for those living with kidney disease.
3. Advocacy and Policy Change:
- We advocate for policies at the state and federal level that support kidney health and address disparities in care.
- NKFM works to secure funding for programs that prevent or manage kidney disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
4. Community Engagement:
- We partner with community organizations and stakeholders to improve health outcomes, particularly among at-risk populations.
- Our outreach and education raise awareness about kidney health and the importance of organ donation.
This organization is critical in the effort to combat kidney disease. Through prevention, support, advocacy, and community engagement, we are making a real difference in Michigan.
