THE CEO PLAYS THE MOST CRUCIAL ROLE IN SETTING A HEALTHY TONE FOR THE ORGANIZATION

The old adage, “It’s lonely at the top,” is true—perhaps now more than ever. And isolation isn’t exclusive to CEOs; it extends to workers across the board. In a post-COVID world, the struggles with mental health, anxiety, loneliness, and disconnectedness represent a significant issue, bordering on a modern plague.

Within this landscape, the CEO plays the most crucial role in setting a healthy tone for the organization and building a healthy team. Yet, many leaders lack an internal confidant. This is important because the pressure is immense: balancing the expectations of a board or investors with the practical challenge of managing the team and systems required to deliver results. Despite the “coolness” of being the boss, the role carries substantial weight.

Many leaders find immense value in connecting with a peer group of like-minded individuals, whether within their industry or outside of it.

Building Your Support System

Having a community of other leaders is incredibly valuable, providing essential perspective on your own work. Here are key support systems to consider before you face a crisis:

1. Peer Groups and Roundtables

For business founders whose companies have reached at least $1 million in annual revenue (with a median around $7-8 million), the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) is a good example. Upon meeting the qualifications and aligning with the organization’s core values, members join a global network of thousands of other entrepreneurs who have shared similar experiences. EO provides a fantastic environment to learn, develop, share resources, and commiserate.

EO is one of several robust “roundtable groups” designed for peer exchange. Other notable organizations include Vistage, which is also a massive global network. These groups allow you to sit with peers and share challenges, opportunities, and successes.

2. Coaching and Mentorship

mentor is often a wise sage who provides advice based on having already achieved what you aspire to. A coach, by contrast, rolls up their sleeves with you, working through specific challenges, providing accountability, and challenging your assumptions. Both roles are highly valuable, and many leaders benefit from having both types of relationships.

3. Professional Counseling and Therapy

Leading a growing business often incurs a significant cost to one’s personal health (physical or mental) and family life. That is why high-performing leaders establish support systems before they need them. Doing so helps prevent leaders from turning to addictions or distractions to self-medicate during times of intense pressure.

There should be no shame in seeking professional counseling or therapy services when needed. While a business coach can work alongside a therapist, they operate in different lanes. Relying solely on the “rugged individual” approach might work for a while, but eventually, something critical breaks.

In summary, any leader would benefit from seeking out community and professional support systems proactively, ensuring you are prepared for the inevitable challenges of the job.
